Call of Duty Update: File Size Shrinks Ahead of Black Ops 7 Launch Xbox players get relief as MW2 and MW3 content gets separated to reduce Call of Duty’s install footprint
Ever feel like Call of Duty is taking over your console's storage? You're not alone. Thankfully, ahead of the Black Ops 7 release, Activision is trimming the fat.
📦 What’s Changing?
- Modern Warfare II and III content will roll out as separate downloads, starting July 29 at 9 AM PT, making them optional outside the main COD launcher.
- On August 7, embedded content from those games will be removed from the base install, significantly shrinking the footprint of the core Call of Duty app. Players will still be able to install those titles if desired.
This update is meant to give Xbox users more control over what’s installed, cutting unnecessary bulk and improving download management.
🕹️ Black Ops 7 Update & Timing
- Black Ops 7 is expected to launch in November 2025, likely mid-November, after Gamescom promotions in August.
- Even with this file cleanup, the new title will add substantial data back into the system—but the overall experience should be more streamlined.
✅ Why This Matters
- More storage freedom: No more forced downloads of MW titles if you don’t play them regularly.
- Streamlined launcher: A leaner install means easier updates and less space taken up.
- Future-proofing: Prepares the COD ecosystem for upcoming entry-heavy releases like Black Ops 7.
📝 TL;DR
- Call of Duty's main app file size will decrease starting August 7 by offloading MW2 & MW3 as separate downloads.
- This change brings a more modular install system—picking and choosing what to keep.
- Black Ops 7 is still expected to launch around November 2025, and this update improves long-term storage flexibility ahead of its release.
