Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Zombies Brings Back the O4—But It Could Be a Problem The return of Dempsey, Takeo, Richtofen, and Nikolai is exciting, but it may overshadow Black Ops’ newer cast
The hype around Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Zombies has been building steadily since Treyarch dropped the cinematic intro for its first map, Ashes of the Damned. Between the Fallout-style villain and the return of the O4, excitement is high—but one design choice might end up holding the mode back.
🎮 Zombies’ Expanded Cast
After Black Ops 6 Zombies: The Reckoning, many players wondered if the Terminus crew was finished. Instead, Treyarch confirmed that both the original O4 (Dempsey, Takeo, Richtofen, Nikolai) and the Terminus crew will be playable Operators in BO7.
On paper, this sounds great. Players get more character variety and more dialogue combinations to enjoy. Even better, those who completed every BO6 Easter egg will carry forward special quest reward skins for the Terminus members.
But unlike Alpha Omega, where characters were chosen randomly, BO7 allows players to pick who they want. And when given that choice, it’s easy to see which crew will dominate the lobbies.
🕹️ Why Everyone Will Pick the O4
The O4 aren’t just characters—they’re icons. Debuting all the way back in Shi No Numa, they carried the Aether storyline for more than a decade. Nostalgia, story weight, and even Nolan North’s unforgettable take on Richtofen make them the go-to picks for fans.
The problem? That leaves the Terminus squad in the dust. While Treyarch is sure to give them dialogue and backstory, most players may never hear it firsthand. New Richtofen—this time fully aligned with the Nazi regime—is far more intriguing than Carver or Weaver.
⚰️ Should the Terminus Crew Have Been Retired?
Looking at their story arcs, you could argue the Terminus crew already had their closure:
- Weaver faced his obsession with killing Richtofen in Shattered Veil.
- Carver wrapped up his storyline with S.A.M. in The Reckoning.
- Maya avenged her brother in Citadelle Des Morts, her main narrative drive.
- Dr. Grey found closure with S.A.M., whichever ending you chose.
Bringing them back as playable Operators may feel like wasted effort. A better fit might have been keeping them as NPC guides or lore drops, allowing Treyarch to pour more energy into the O4’s dialogue and presence.
🧟 A Missed Opportunity or a Balanced Approach?
To Treyarch’s credit, they’re aiming to expand, not replace. If they manage to write standout dialogue and give the Terminus crew new narrative purpose, they might surprise players. But realistically, most fans will stick with the O4 they grew up with.
Still, one thing is certain: the nostalgia of seeing Dempsey, Takeo, Richtofen, and Nikolai back on-screen will be enough to keep the community buzzing—whether or not the rest of the cast gets their due.
